“where to start??”
Well that’s always a good question I figure so the topic title caught my eye.
The question was about link development and I always start in the wrong place by heading off to one of the webmaster forums and opening one hundred and one FF tabs on topics which grab my attention. Not all of them to do with links. So I know a little about what people say on the subject.
After several attempts to start I have pretty much decided to pay someone to do this bit of the job but my effort doesn’t end there.
I then headed off to freelancer sites and … one hundred and one FF tabs on topics ….
So a further decision. I need a plan.
I always end up with my head stuffed with nonsense (or are they sage words of advice? I really don’t know the difference sometimes) after these forays into “web research” – I’m sure that’s supposed to be a euphemism for something m,uch more exiting that what I was doing.
Hence decided to write my thoughts here. Aim: unstuff my head, make a plan, then purchase the help required.
Hey that’s almost a plan … only problem is it’s a plan that does not result in any links. Hmmm.
It is an answer to the question though. Where to start? Summarise it as get organised.
The thread is here
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=2097809
and a good answer that may help me along the way with the next step is in this reply.
there are some steps
1-Submit your site to web directories
2-write some articles related to your site
3-Submit articles
4-Social Bookmarking sites
5-forums
6-Blogs

So a new years resolution to be positive around both negative and positive people?
And that’s why for me, positive people have the responsibility
to try influence the negative ones, and not avoid them. I view it as absurdity
when positive people simply decide to walk away from them to protect their own
feelings. Isn’t it much better if you try to direct them out of dark?
The advantage of being around negative people is that it’s easier for you to feel better about yourself.
A soft of being happier with the money you have because those around you have lest phenomenon. Comparitive advantage for the psyche?

Google Adwords. This simple addition of a standard “TM” alongside potential
trademark terms will help to avoid falling fowl of such things inadvertently.
I’ll bet you that google tell you somewhere that it’s indicative only.
No legal consequences etc etc. Not sure why they wouldn’t build in a warning to their software though. That would be even more helpful.

Shit shit shit. Just typed a huge long post and when I clicked publish WP said you ado not have permission.
It’s gone, it’s gone , aaargh. Computer out the window, screaming, general mayhem.
A tip for you. Try this:
1. Leave the IE window with the failed request open.
2. Use Windows Start button and start a seperate IE window
3. Login to your WP blog as if you want to create a new post.
4. Select remember me when you log in
5. Go back to the IE window witth the post that M$ shamelessly lost for you.
6. press the back button. You’ll go back to the create post window with everything empty.
7. Now press the forward button and you’ll be asked if you want to send the data again.
8. Say yes and your post will appear.
Well we hope it will, worth a try and next time install some software that monitors what you type on a webpage form and keeps a record of it. We can’t think of any immediately but have a root around in the directory at http://softwaredownload.blodcast.com and I’m sure you’ll find something.

Just went through the whole list of 47 comments in the month I was away.
spam spam spam bye bye. Not quite enough of them that it’s worth finding a more automated solution .. YET …
There is an easy result that I record here for prosperity for those who actually read and then think they’ll try for a comment and link.
My little FAQ for comments here:
1. I WILL publish relevant comments.
2. You have to say something about the post you are commenting on though.
3. I won’t ever publish generic comments. Great blog site. I love the comments about XXXX wheree XXXX is some quoted text from my post or comment. etc etc.
4. When I get round to being automated I want the option to auto-spam everything from a given email, domain, ip etc.
5. To get a comment published here just write your own thoughts about my thoughts.
6. That’s what comments are for.
7. If you don’t understand look at what I’m doing.
8. This blog is almost completely almost uniquely comments and more comments so why would I not post other peoples comments on whart I have written. Why not indeedy? I will. Please post something about what you have read.
9. Devious souls (do they have souls though?) have started trying it on with I added you to my RSS reader, the award for inventiveness and also nastinessare the attempts to appeal to my geneal sense of wanting to help fellow human beings with the likes of I’m having trouble adding you to my rss reader. Please help me. Be not deceived people, this is generic mass posted spam. (also known as a comment linking to a .ru domain. Against my principles to denegrate an entire country like that but unfortunately it’s true)
10. I WILL publish relevant comments.
So who wants to be pretty much the first to get their real valued contribution published
By the way I WILL also approve anything wacky weird off the cuff or simply juvenile. But if has to be a real reaction to whatever I posted.
C’mon guys some real comments and I promise to check them sooner.

Microsoft (I always call em M$) likes to “help out” by installing patches in the middle of the night. That is a good thing. But whatever goodwill they earn with
this convenience is immediately destroyed when first thing in the morning a “reboot computer” message appears. And appears… and appears…
Anything intrusive should not be automatic so completely turning off automatic updates which may change or disable features I am using is exactly what I would choose to do.
What I need is to a. turn off updates, b. get a message (email or reminder) that an update is available – needed. Maybe even automatically download the thing and save it ready to go.
How about offerring something that does that?

Gesture control lets you mute an incoming call or snooze the alarm by simply

Shake control lets you shuffle, skip and even adjust the volume by simply

So what about you? Do you really take the time to add the post to any other
bookmark/social media sites except Stumbleupon, or do you just read it and
continue to surf other blogs. Personally, I rarely add posts that I have
read to Stumbleupon unless they really would make a difference to my friends and
is something that they would find interesting.
Have to admit I have yet to fully embrace online bookmarking but am looking at a way to use it now simply to achieve the same things I would with offline bookmarking.
I.e. the really anciant habit of adding something to my favourites or bookmarks.
In that case I add a page or blog post that has something I want to come back to later or [very unusually] is so interesting I want to visit regularly.
Problem with only having YOUR choice of social bookmarking site is that it may not be mine.
Maybe an alternative is to add the long list of add bookmarks links somewhere like a sidebar where the user who doesn’t need them will not be distracted from leaving their comment.

I got tired of using tools that were available for examining niches. Most are
never updated for new sites. So I built my own on a website, so that everyone
can use it.
So if you enter a keyword it generates the URLs to search for that keyword on a number of blogSE, forum sites etc.
Sort of simple but sometimes simple is nice. Or am I missing something bigger?
My immediate reaction was to select the 7 searches for blogs and press F& to grab them offline and in the background with Kybie from 1keytools.com. As an impationt sod that makes it more useful still.

Mobile web use will still be a small percentage for most web sites. However,
it will continue to grow and highly trafficked web sites will be expected to
have an ‘iPhone version.’
I want to dispute your iphone prediction.
I think the 2009 trend will be that people will realise that overpriced tech items that were special mainly because they were white (and break quickly) are really bad value. In the ongoing spirit and trend of bubbles bursting and downsizing. iphones will die and people will realise that the value [common sense] option is having a decent sized screen connected to the mobile phones 3G network.

Interesting and very negative that exactly half of your top 10 are anti-malware or cleanup programs. Testament to a mess.

Way to get rid of the identity theft problem is to make big organisations like banks and including paypal liable for the losses.

Only trouble is that it’s not usually true that you get what you pay for with software. Microsoft maybe the ultimate example, certainly the biggest.

answer is a new service called acobox. They allow you to grab the photo you need
and link to it from their site. No server space needed, no copyright hassles, no
worries.
In general you can better copy the pictures you will use if that is allowed.
Not only will pages load faster because the browser has less places to go and collect things but if you load pictures from someone elses server, you lose control over what your page shows.
I *think* there is even some risk of your page being hijacked by someone doing all sorts of bad things. All in all I would copy the images to your own server. Server space should be available pretty cheap these days.

You know they have one mopuntain covered in snow up in winter too. If your ski-ing is above beginner it’s a great couple of days because there are no queues for the lifts.

brand of shampoo that I couldn’t find after walking round the toiletries
section.
When I asked the sales assistant, she put on a long face and vaguely waved
her hand refusing to budge from where she was standing. It’s a good thing I
wasn’t asking for her opinion regarding what kind of wood flooring
Hmmm from shampoo to wood floring. … Well I can guess what you were aiming at anyway.
I think the helfulness of staff varies greatly between countries. Thailand is my favourite, Holland the place I would never buy anything unless I really have to.

I’ll end this article with one very simple, yet potentially powerful
technique to stimulate word of mouth for your blog. You may be surprised at how
simple it is, yet most bloggers don’t do it. Have you guessed?
Talk about your blog.
Pretty sure you have to combine that with a blog that more than half the people who visit are interested enough to come back to.
It’s always true that you have to start somewhere though

We know you hate receiving spam in your mailbox, and we’re working hard to help.
While there may always be bad guys trying to get their messages through to you,
at Yahoo! we’re tightening up on our spam controls
I am very unhappy with your spam blocking. I have been advertising goods on craigslist and getting both spam-scanmers and real people mailing me who want some info. The problem is many of those on yahoo are not getting info that I send due to your spam filters.
Anyone competing with my ad can just reply so they get a mail from me and hit this is Spam.
Worse still this is not only yaho but gmail (where I read that spam filters are NOT OPTIONAL. Also hotmail who seem to not even show mail I sent in their junk folder). I have never sent spam and can only assume I am the victim of some guy without principles who just saw an easy way to get rid of the competition.

too bad. Yahoo has blocked This Is True
from your mailbox.
Yahoo! extends its idiot streak by
blocking some 20,000+ subscribers of one of the oldest, and best run email
newsletters on the net. Why? Because instead of hitting the unsubscribe button
like any self-respecting web user would do, they hit the ‘this is spam’ button.
This affects publishers and subscribers,
Think about it, it’s worse than that.
Anyone competing with your site can just arrange to get a mail from you and hit this is Spam. The same goes for anyone advertising something on a classifed website.
Worse still this is not only yaho but gmail (where I read that spam filters are NOT OPTIONAL. Also hotmail who seem to not even show mail I sent in their junk folder. Just today I hit the annual limit for Paypal
and my account will freeze if
I receive as little as $50. Can you imagine that?
Don’t write off bank transfer quite so quick. In most of mainland Europe
that’s the usual way to pay for stuff.
Even in the UK it’s becoming more common.
I’m still wondering what the limit is

The top one per cent of earners has an average income of (say) £300,000, so the
extra tax per earner would be £7,500.
The much larger increase in revenue is the [partial] removal of personal allowance for those on over 100k. Much larger (x10+) group of people afected.
Anyway those in the UK on 300k have millions in bonusses as well. But the bonusses mostly don’t go through the regular IT so unaffected by this 5%. Doubt many will leave.

While you may personally love waiting in lines outside a school gymnasium
in the hopes that your vote is counted on election day I think the future ballot
looks a bit different.
Voting online securely can be thought of as an extension to the
‘Absentee Ballot.’ The security model is exactly the same. The voter receives a
registration code in the mail. It is a unique code that allows the person to go
online and vote through a web portal
I don’t understand why this queueing is a necessary thing anyway. I can tell you for sure that you don’t have to wait much in either the UK or Holland to vote. There are simply enough polling stations to cope.
Agree that online voting would be great but why does this problem exist in the USA anyway? Also is it true for *everyone* that you have lines that last for hours or are the jokes about wanting to vote whilst poor and black based on truth?

WordPress is the best tool
for Blogging. Moreover it has become popular as Content Management System.
As its functionality can be enhanced by using pluggins .Content Management is
total content control. With a content management system, or CMS, you can
maintain consistency across your site with a few clicks. Whether brand
messaging, news, or even look and feel, a CMS makes site wide maintenance simple
and quick. But there’s more to it than that.
This is a bold statement.
But you don’t back it up with an explanation of why it is better than other CMS or indeed blog tools.
The advantages you mention are common to most of them. How is it better than b2evolution.
Indeed one of the main advatages you mention – the ability to change something sitewide can be achieved on an HTML site using the php include statement. So simple that anyone could learn the basic ins and outs in 10 minutes or so.
I am trying WP for the first time on this blog and finding that pages are rather slow to load. I hate waiting and would always rather create things locally on my laptop and then upload them anyway. I guess I will have to spend some time looking for a WP add on to do that.

Bingo you click extract file contents and it extracts the contents of your
zipped file in the directory that you uploaded it to.
It is important that you upload it to the proper location before unzipping
it.
Does it tell me what the default permission is when I extract from a tar.gz?

I can see why Google would recommend the larger sizes, because they will be
more likely to catch the eys, but if they ar eplaced poorly within the sites
design, I doubt if the sizes will make much of a difference. It certainly wont
make a difference in your adsense revenues.
Sorry for being forever the cyncic but might the improvement of clicks to ads that take up more screen space simply be due to more accidental clicks.
Which part of the screen gets the accidental clicks might be a useful thing to research if you just want more clicks.

My AdSense earnings are not meeting my projected targets. My CTR seems a little
low and EPC also down.
AdSense is so tricky and hard to figure what exactly
is the actual problem. Are my blog boring and readership down? More people know
how to implement SEO on their bogs and websites and more people going after the
same pie?
SEO – getting traffic and marketing does seem to be a very populated area of blog and forum activity.
I am surprised earnings are stable enough that you can reliably speak of them “going down”. Or is it that you were used to a steady increase and when the increase stops and you see your first decrease which is actually a normal variation around a steady level. Except for really enormous traffic levels I would have thought you would see variation of 20-30% around a mean anyway.
Do google still not publish what part of the revenue the publisher gets? I know that used to be how it was.
If there is still google-secrecy, they could be changing that behind the scenes to meet short term corporate and their own financial-reporting objectives. Or have they explicitly said they don’t do that?

Thanks for the article. I hope Windows 7 will be have much improvement than
vista. Hopefully it will be faster.
….
So what exactly are the changes seen in Windows 7. It looks just like Vista
too.
I hope they have fixed all the bugs found in this version of Vista
though!
Wow are these comments the ultimate expression of eternal optimism or what?
faster?
all the bugs fixed?
which previous versions did M$ do either of those things
BTW Windows 2000 is both faster and I suspect has less bugs than Vista so maybe that’s worth a try.

You won’t become rich if you’re not creative..
Some money making ebooks is
good..
But must find the useful one and from the popular author..
Not even famous authours selling millions of a literary work and making themselves famous become rich in many cases.
Possibly depends what is the meaning of rich to you as an individual which will vary widely. The best you could hope for from e-books is some thousands. I wouldn’t call that rich.

One of my
favorite ways to use the power of wordpress is to use custom
templates to make parts or pages of the web site unique. I will show
you today how to use a page template as a custom template to make a page on
Wordpress that can be totally custom. It can have its own characteristics and or
features which can be totally different from the main front page of the
website.
Interesting that the main power of WP is widely stated to be the fact it is used so much and therefore there is so much help-information and already written code.
But the feature you are highlighting is the ability to write raw code. More akin to the advantages of having access to creating php source.

Isn’t the biggest issue with torrents the possibility – probability that governemnets are going to get more nasty and more compliant to the nasty folk who run big corporate media co.s
I.e. that they’ll chase anyone – preferably the small weak guys who can’t fight back – on small scale copyright violation.
I am always outside the UK and would love to get British telly but even though the chance is small you are the one they make an example of, downloading copyright material from the net is not annonymous any more and not totally risk free.

One of the most effective ways is of optimizing your
battery life is to use profiles. What I mean is that you stop the use of
hardware devices that you dont need saving chunks of battery life. For e.g. If
you are in a flight you can safely disable your modem, network adapter, unused
USB ports, 1394 FireWire devices, card reader, wireless and even
your DVD drive to get the most of your laptops battery.
What you are really describing is mostly how to make maximum use of the battery power available. The principle comes down to switch everything off that you don’t use.
What I always wanna know is how to increase the life of my battery. A new PC usually gives 3 hours – my last IBM-Lenovo was 4, my current Fujitsu a small 3. After ever a year the Fujitsu hardly lasts more than 1, the IBM still beats 2 hours at 3 years old.
This stuff is supposedly down to memory effect. I used to think that the best way to get long life from a battery was always run it down to zero. Recently I heard that just the opposite is true. Let it run down a bit then recharge to full. Would love to know the real answer.

There is no secret formula here. It’s just one
simple trick of placing a call-to-action email subscription right after the
article.
Sort of true with all marketing and software user interface design too – it’s the absolute no brainer obvious thing that makes the biggest difference.
Something that’s so easy you’d think I don’t believe that would make a significant effect.

Doing things in the raw code is not a big deal if a person knows html and how
to use it well. But we all like to progress and many times people would rather
not have to mess around with the raw html code just to make nicely formated and
feature rich posts. After all that is what a ‘WYSIWYG’ visual editor is for,
right?
This plugin will add all kinds of extra buttons and functions to the default
wordpress editor. It makes the WordPress TinyMCE editor look similar to the
image below
Hmmm but how much server CPU resource does it use. And how long do you have to wait if your net connection is bad that day.
I know it’s all the latest thing to have server side software but until we have 99.999% uptime and repsonse times of UNDER 0.1 seconds, I prefer WYSIWYG and anything doing supercharged processing to do it on my machine – the one I don’t share with anyone and that doesn’t have a dodgy copper wire connecting my screen to it (well I hope not)
